  • PLANTING

Sweet peas thrive in well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Choose a cool full sun to partial shade location.

Sow seeds directly into the ground in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked and before the last frost date in your area. Ensure the soil temperature is around 10-15°C.

Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 8 inches apart. Provide support for the sweet pea vines to climb by installing trellises, stakes, or netting.

    GROWING

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the growing season, especially during dry periods. Water at the base of the plants to prevent diseases. Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize sweet peas with a rich balanced compost tea or organic fertilizer every 3-4 weeks throughout the growing season to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Pinch off the growing tips of the sweet pea plants when they reach about 6 inches in height to encourage bushier growth and more flowers. Protect the plants from slugs, rabbits and deer.

    HARVESTING

Sweet pea flowers are best harvested in the morning when the blooms are fully open and fragrant. Use clean, sharp snips to cut the stems just above a set of leaves. Harvesting encourages further flower production. Avoid harvesting sweet pea flowers during the heat of the day to prevent wilting. Remove any spent blooms regularly to prolong the flowering period.
